Prose & Poetry

Janne Buurman writes. All sorts of stuff. Prose, poetry, song lyrics, columns. At the age of nineteen he wins a literary award for his short Story ‘The Great Desire’, published by Meulenhof. Invited by Elsevier’s Weekly he spends three days in Amsterdam. He meets author Jan Wolkers, who shares his signing session (including each other’s books) at the 1968 Annual Book Fair in the RAI Conference Hall. The next day he interviews another reknown author, Godfried Bomans at his villa in Bloemendaal. Both encounters have been extensively delineated in: ‘Jimmy Burn’s New Glasses‘.

After a shortlived carreer as a reporter for several national newspapers, music takes over and prevailes from then on. More of this in ‘A Brief Musical History’, elsewhere on this site. After a turbulent life with numerous professional wanderings, he opens the Amsterdam Royal Gallery with his charismatic spouse Emma Jean Brown (1952 – 2021). For the duration of twelve years they host monthly exhibitions with artists from all over the world and live music of all imaginable genres. The Gallery represented both a ‘local living room’ and a ‘global hub’. The yearly street festivals also brought many visitors, residents and artists together. Nowadays J.J.Buurman still writes poetry, song lyrics and columns, but now, as a die hard late bloomer, also full size novels. The Jimmy Burn Trilogy is a recent example. Published by Boekscout.

In progress: ‘The Return Of Jimmy Burn’ , part three of the trilogy, ‘Ever After’ (collected poems) and ‘Cufflinks for a T-shirt’ (short stories). English versions pending. His style is clearly unique and original. Never shy of clichés or the lyrical though. His motto: ‘Dump New Pragmatism’ bears witness. Janne buurman (1948) was born and raised in Vlissingen, aka Flushing (the original), but has been living and working in Amsterdam for the last forty years. And left solid footprints in both places. With his theatre show ‘The Word Is Out’, a mixture of poetry and music, he performs regularly. Stage name: ‘Jay Bee Sliverfox’. His column ‘Janne’ appears every three months in Amsterdam based magazine OpNieuw.

Jimmy Burn’s New Glasses

Jimmy Burn’s life story is turbulent. He makes a spectacular discovery and subsequently becomes wealthy beyond compare. It’s teeming with hot pursuits, passion and extensive travel. Suspense and sensation are paramount. Interlaced with humor and romance. Here and there slightly literary but never elitist. The new glasses open his eyes and those of the reader to a world full of adventure. Jimmy Burn’s New Glasses is the first novel a trilogy about the leading character. Each volume may be read independantly or as a sequel.

Prose

Jimmy Burn’s Sunglasses is part two of a sizzling trilogy. With wit and social awareness the reader is introduced into a turbulent world, suspiciously similar to ours.

In the second novel Jimmy Burn is on the road again. And for those who are familiar with our hero, it’s not exactly a rose garden. Backed by his unyielding spouse Bella Mae Butterfield however, together they beat the hurdles on their journey through life. Fortunately help arrives from unexpected angles, mostly in the nick of time. As usual a lengthy string of famous characters appears in the story, both historical and contemporay. In line with the previous, suspense, sensation, humor, romance and weird surprises are omnipresent. The moment you think to know how it ends, an unexpected twist will put you on the wrong track. In spite of all this Jimmy Burn is just a regular guy of flesh and blood, in whom we can recognize ourselves. Not very mundane, but truly genuine. And nicely exciting.

Poem of the month

Portrait of a Lady Dressed in One Glove

You are beautiful
and you smell nice
like volcanoes and avalanches simultaneously presented
on a saucer full of secrets in the shadow of your smile while
in the constellation of your solar complexus
Mary’s little lambs are dancing with the tiger
confusing the stars and stripes
of zebra crossing bar codes on a star stepping sky bridge
reaching far beyond the daily sticks and stones and oozing
flowers screaming colors on a white sheet yielding blood and juices
intercontinentally licking the night

Merciful mercenary fighting and defying phony Florence Nightingales
Save Our Souls – forsake me not &
stay forever hot
cutely
curly
licking the night
the cool blue night
between your fingers
